The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive moments β not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing β emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president started showing all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse β the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently research predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have attempted β truly, no other president would have contemplated β independently wrecking significant portions of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the leader seek toι’ θ¦ the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us β among senior generations almost a majority β who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly definitely not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for others, specifically for the impoverished β not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the other cheek β not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and direct truth that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a form of radical love centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down β Protestantism was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump arise in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the best parts of American history.

The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the highest within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it means both meekness and conviction, a mixture that committed American Christians ought to accept.
