The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
