Educating a Baby to Become an 'British Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Investment?

Child education concept
The firm responsible for the listing states that what appears like "luxury or peculiarity" is truly "intentional commitment in early-stage instruction".

"Parents based in north London wants to find an remarkable and experienced educator to assist their youngest child on his first steps to becoming an English gentleman."

Upon seeing this post, you might readily miss the term "initial stages" as just figurative language.

Yet, it might be the crucial aspect of this unusual position posting, as it aims to hire a mentor for a 12-month-old.

Many of submissions have since been received since the unidentified family advertised their search for the £180,000 per year tutor, who has to be "an exceptional individual".

Over the last few weeks, the advert has received interest throughout the media, with numerous asking why?

Progressive Approach

The CEO, head and founder of an education consultancy, which is helping the family in their quest, said that in spite of early scepticism, he considered the concept "visionary", and "advanced".

When he met the family, he mentioned they recognized the unusual character of their request, and how immature their son is.

However, they stated that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had held off until their older child was five, and by that stage "cultural bias had by then set in".

What exactly does the family mean by "cultural bias"?

It's "all-encompassing", he responded. "The way you eat, the way you speak".

He explained the older sibling had picked up "very nuanced, unspoken signals" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family explained to the consultant they hoped to prevent this pattern to repeat itself with their infant.

The intention: To hire a UK tutor, who must speak with RP, to guide the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency state the post has initiated a wider discussion about how parents perceive education, advantage and the function of family background in learning.

Natural Absorption

"Much of the education at the start here is rather acquired indirectly," explained the expert.

It's via this subtle influence that the family are aiming the child will acquire the British traits they wish to cultivate.

Adam said the tutor had to be someone who attended "prestigious academies – similar types of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The instructor must be the suitable individual, they'll be doing things they aren't even aware they're doing, effortlessly," he said.

Expense Not a Factor

The family explained to the expert the successful candidate should ideally also have understanding of or interest in riding, skiing, creative fields and music so as to shape the child in a broad spectrum of hobbies.

Additionally though, he explained the family desired the tutor to enrol the child on a range of lessons so the child would be "equestrian training and starting an tool by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's minds, helping their son grow into a "English gentleman" will lead to achievement and create opportunities.

"For all the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a class statement," he adds.

But, notwithstanding all this instruction in "UK identity", might the child absorb so-called cultural leaning from the international family he resides with anyway?

"Yes", answered Adam. "The parents understand this could fail, but they've merely embraced the perspective of, 'let's give it a go and we should start as soon as we can', because the expense of it is not a concern," he explained.

Overly Optimistic

There are some in the private teaching field who express similar reservations.

An education leader, chief executive of an educational organization, who supplies private tutors, stated that "the development of becoming bicultural, or actually, discovering oneself, is something that must be grown into, not engineered."

Peter noted that he had relocated from China to the United Kingdom at the period of seven, and had been raised understanding and practicing dual heritages. He went on to be educated at the University of Cambridge.

The executive was the first person hailing from China to be selected to the position of Treasurer of the university debating society.

"The concept that an individual can act as a representation of Britishness, an individual who can somehow transfer the characteristics of a UK sophisticate to a infant child, strikes me as naive and unrealistic," he stated.

"Based on my background, engaging a distinctly British tutor from early childhood will will not automatically achieve the goal they desire.

"I did not have that kind of mentor, and yet I have been privileged enough to experience many of the experiences they aspire for their son."

He continued: "The truth is, personal identity should not be forced from the outside; it must be chosen, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, UK identity is something Adam hopes can be taught – and commercialized.

"I think the fact that the global community holds us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
