A Forecasting Platform Participant Profited $436K on Wagers Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Market Movement in Predictions
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Probability Spikes Before News Break
Platform data shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
But the odds had increased to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Legal Questions Grows
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Market Background
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.
Prediction markets were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
